Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. Several different viruses cause viral hepatitis. They are named the hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E viruses.
All of these hepatitis viruses cause acute, or short-term, viral hepatitis. The hepatitis B, C, and D viruses can also cause chronic hepatitis, in which the infection is prolonged, sometimes lifelong. Untreated, it can cause severe illness and even death.
As with HIV and other chronic diseases, hepatitis is making inroads in our society at an increasing prevalence. Hepatitis is one of the leading causes of end stage liver disease in the United States. In addition, many people with HIV are coinfected with hepatitis C. A hepatitis infection can accelerate HIV and vice-versa.
New medications can manage and even cure hepatitis infection. The cure rate for hepatitis ranges from 60% to 100% depending on the type of hepatitis infection. In addition, new medications are being research and approved each year.
To prevent end stage liver disease, cirrhosis and liver cancer, Capital Medical Associates provides expert care and treatment for those infected with hepatitis.
In addition to hepatitis treatment, we advocate testing for those at possible risk of infection, and vaccination of those not infected with hepatitis A and B to prevent one from ever coming down with one of these potentially fatal infections. Please consider discussing with your provider whether you are at risk for hepatitis and whether you are a candidate for immunization
